Environmental Certification Award

February 16, 2016 | Awards

Garry Makamson Farms was recently awarded the Cropland Environmental Certification and the On-Farm Security Certification by Validus Ventures, LLC for their commitment to environmental cropland stewardship and on-farm safety and security standards.

The Environmental Certification program focuses on six key areas: water quality, soil quality, plants, wildlife, irrigation, and energy use. The audit involves maintaining or improving soil productivity and water quality, improving wildlife habitats, controlling noxious weeds, reducing energy inputs, restricting access to fuel, pesticides and fertilizer storage, improving energy conservation and improving security of stored grain.

The On-Farm Security Certification focuses on six main items of standard including crop storage, permanent pesticide storage, permanent fertilizer storage, fuel storage, equipment, and identity preserved crop. Each of the six main items is audited for theft and bio-terrorism, location, documentation, sanitation and containment, and employee safety. These standards assist in managing and mitigating risks for the operation.
